Description | Wendan Tang represents one of the most common Chinese remedies for phlegm disorders. The earliest version of this prescription was recorded in Sun Simiao’s influential 7th century medical primer, Essential Formulas for Emergencies Worth a Thousand Pieces of Gold (Qianjin yaofang). Originally presented as a remedy for digestive weakness in post-febrile situations, Wendan Tang is now most often used for all kinds of metabolic excess conditions. While best known as a common prescription for many digestive tract conditions, the tendency of phlegm pathology to “obscure the orifice of the heart” has also evolved its reputation as one of the best-known psychoactive remedies in the Chinese formulary. It can therefore be considered a suitable base remedy for digestive issues involving brain chemistry imbalances. As one of the representative remedies in the pinellia family of herbs, Wendan Tang is a safe and efficient way to address a broad variety of counterflow issues afflicting the digestive system, the respiratory system, the cardiovascular system, and the nervous system. Common diagnostic markers for these variegated afflictions are counterflow-related digestive symptoms paired with potential indications of toxic heat and signs of mental-emotional imbalance.
