The formula emerged in China in the 1600’s and was modified later by Japanese doctors. The ointment was developed to treat skin conditions that were inflamed or infectious. Today, Japanese acupuncturists also use it as a burn preventative with the use of moxibustion therapy. In Chinese medicine, Zi Cao (Lithospermum erythrorhizon root) is used to treat eczema, psoriasis, rashes, skin lesions, itching, and burns. The purple-red color of Shiunko Ointment is the result of the natural deep red hue of Zi Cao root infused in the oil. Dang Gui (Angelica sinensis root) is one of the most commonly used herbs in Chinese medicine and is prescribed both internally and topically. It is used for swelling, pus, skin irritation, and to rebuild the flesh. Sesame oil is a nutrient rich and nourishing oil that is utilized for its soothing and restoring properties. Together, the ingredients in Shiunko can benefit inflamed, irritated, dry, itching, oozing, and slow to heal skin. Excellent for treating windburn from cold, dry, or windy environmental conditions. |
