The design of this remedy was first recorded by Gao Lian, a 16th century poet and medical scholar who was an ardent proponent of the Daoist arts of nourishing life. Gao’s book, Eight Pieces on Observing the Fundamental Principles of Life (Zunsheng bajian), is still regarded as a comprehensive source of traditional lifestyle information by Chinese physicians today. Most of the remedies in this valuable collection, however, have since become forgotten.
