Melissa Officianalis oil is not a traditional ingredient in Chinese herbal medicine, but it has been used in a variety of applications in medical science. M. officinalis extract has been reported to inhibit protein synthesis and to exhibit antiviral activity against HSV-1, the cold sore virus.
*Allahverdiyev et al. showed the antiviral effect of volatile oils of M. officinalis against HSV-1 and HSV-2 viruses. They showed that various specific concentrations showed toxic effects on HEp-2 cells and exhibited antiviral activity against HSV-2. Their in vivo findings indicate that M. officinalis L. extract inhibit the HSV-2 replication at nontoxic doses.
