Actions The chief herb, dang gui, tonifies the blood, regulates the menses, moistens the intestines and unblocks the bowels. The deputy herbs, huang qin, which clears heat and drains fire, especially from the upper burner, and da huang, which drains heat and purges accumulation from the interior, enhance the chief herb’s action of moistening the intestines. The assistant herbs, chai hu, which raises the yang qi of the spleen, and sheng ma, which clears heat and raises the yang, regulate the qi of the spleen and stomach. The envoy, gan cao, harmonizes the stomach and the actions of the other herbs. Based on the combination of these herbs, this formula clears heat, drains accumulations the in intestines, and tonifies the blood.
