Description | Supports a Calm Mind* "The Eclectic physicians in the latter 19th and early 20th century prescribed Blue Vervain, Oat and Motherwort as nerve tonics to treat various nervous afflictions such as "hysteria" (premenstrual syndrome or menopausal anxiety), spasms (tension headaches, nervous tics, muscle tension) and nervous exhaustion. The addition of Bacopa and Polygala, both of which have a long history of traditional use a mild sedatives in Ayurvedic and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), respectively, treat many of the symptoms of anxiety. This traditional use is supported by modern scientific studies. Motherwort has a mildly negatively chronotropic effect which is useful for stress induced palpitations. It is also a mild hypertensive agent. This action may be due to the leonurine, which is a mild vasodilator. Bacopa has also been shown in clinical studies to reduce the heart rate. In TCM, Polygala is used to calm a disturbed Shen. Symptoms of a disturbed Shen include restlessness, anxiety, irritability, insomnia and bad dreams, some or all of which may be experienced during anxious times. The saponins contained in the root exhibit dopamine and serotonin receptor antagonist properties. Preclinical tests have shown that Polygala exerts protective effects against neuronal death and can also reduce insomnia, possibly by acting on the proliferation and outgrowth of neuronal cells. Oat provides essential nervous system nutrients such as calcium and magnesium. It is a nervous system trophorestorative and has a long history of use in treating chronic stress and impaired steep patterns. The alkaloidal constituents in the oat , some of which are present only at the milky stage, have mild sedative effects. Oat tincture has been used successfully in human clinical trials to curb nicotine and drug withdrawal symptoms. Blue Vervain exerts cytoprotective effects on the central nervous system, which supports its historical use as an anxiolytic and antispasmodic agent." - Winston: Herbal Therapeutics |
