Description To be used as a supplement to a balanced diet in the presence of stroke (CVA) and its sequelae.*

The Western scientific perspective on cerebrovascular accidents (strokes) is that there is initial damage to tissue due to hypoxia. Then there is more damage to surrounding neural tissue for a short time after loss of oxygen to an area due to release of glutamate and perhaps other toxins. This latter action accounts for more than half of all cell death, and perhaps much more. Immediate treatment according to TCM methods might spare some of the neural tissue. Beyond this immediate sort of treatment, which is to say beyond the first days after the CVA, the loss of neural tissue has both predictable and unpredictable outcomes. There is contralateral loss of motor function in affected motor areas along with loss of consciousness in severe cases or losses unique to the individual. These losses may be related to speaking, vision impairments, memories, special motor skills, and unstable emotional expressions. In addition an individual may experience dizziness, nausea and vomiting, at least in the short term.*

From the Traditional Chinese Medicine perspective stroke is due to the Zang Fu (viscera) loss of balance and excess Yin and Yang. The stroke is also divided into two parts. First, "true apoplexy" is due to Wind evil attack to channels and their collaterals. Secondly, "apoplectoid syndrome" is due to excess Yang burning Wind, Qi and Blood moving up to the head. This second type also has Phlegm and Fire entering the Channels and confusing the Spirit.*

TCM Indications: Hemiplegia and sequelae of apoplexy, deviation of the eye and mouth, loss of speech or obscuring of intricate speech, involuntary drooling, atrophy and unilateral disability to limbs of one side, and involuntary enuresis.*
