Description | Myrrh Tablets is a therapy for blood stasis based on the use of gum resins, myrrh and frankincense. These are added to the traditional formulas Tao Hong Siwu Tang (persica and carthamus added to Siwu Tang) and Cinnamon and Persica Combination (Zhecong Yin), a Japanese prescription for abdominal blood stasis that also includes Siwu Tang (see Tang-kuei Four Combination; Ancient and Modern Formulas). Lycopus, earthworm, and curcuma have been added to dredge the obstructed channels. This formula differs from another Seven Forests prescription for blood stasis, San Qi 17 (which has eight herbs in common with this formula) only slightly. Myrrh Tablets is more suited to treatment of blood stasis caused by non-injury factors, such as infections and inflammation, while San Qi 17 is best used for injuries (including surgical injury). However, they can be substituted for one another if necessary. For long-term treatments following a course of therapy with Myrrh Tablets, consider Remission Pills, which includes Tang-kuei Four Combination with persica and carthamus, or Salvia Shou Wu, which has gentle blood invigorating herbs. The tonic herbs in Myrrh Tablets, including the ingredients of Tang-kuei Four Combination and cinnamon twig, alleviate the concern that a strong blood vitalizing formula might be contraindicated for persons of weak constitution. One can add or substitute Millettia 9 to increase tonic effects while maintaining strong blood vitalizing action. For infections that are resistant to antibiotic therapy, consider using Myrrh Tablets to help the antibiotics or anti-infection herb formulas (e.g., Patrinia 7) and immune cells gain access to the site of infection. | |
