Description Linking Decoction is a very significant formula for liver qi depression with underlying yin vacuity, and therefore addresses a very common pattern found in modern clinical practice. It appears as frequently as the liver/spleen disharmony pattern associated with dan zhi xiao yao san/Moutan and Gardenia Relaxed Wanderer Powder. Frequently, the liver yin and blood will become exhausted from stress, poor diet, use of recreational drugs and alcohol, or use of prescription medications. This will lead to feelings of stuffiness, distention or dull pain in the ribs and chest, associated with liver qi depression. Linking Decoction is also frequently indicated for patterns of stomach yin vacuity heat with acid regurgitation, stomach pain, and loss of appetite. This pattern can be found in cases with ulcer, colitis, liver cirrhosis, hepatitis, or liver cancer.

The pericardium/xin bao channel is the upper portion of the jue yin channel, and can be treated by this formula as well. The xin bao channel has a direct internal vessel, the bao luo, that connects directly to the uterus. Therefore, the yi guan jian/Linking Decoction can be used to treat gynecological disorders matching a pattern of liver qi depression combined with liver yin and/or blood vacuity. Linking Decoction is especially recommended for emotional/psychological patterns caused by vacuity liver heat surging upward and disturbing the xin bao/pericardium. Conditions related to this pattern that may be treated by this formula include hypertension, mood swings, manic depression, anxiety and panic disorder.
