Description | Having elevated blood lipids is a common problem, and is considered a normal part of aging that increase risk of cardiovascular disease. While a portion of blood lipid elevation can be traced to dietary factors (e.g., having more than 30% of calories from fat) many people maintain high blood lipids even after correcting their diet. Guggal, a type of myrrh, is the most frequently recommended herbal supplement for hyperlipidemia; initial research suggested that it could lower blood lipids as well as some drugs, but follow-up research produced more modest results. The active component is mainly the sterone. In China, crataegus is the most frequently mentioned herb for this purpose. This fruit, and rose fruit (as well as immature raspberry fruit, not included in this formulation), are administered in doses of several grams each time (equal to the extracts provided here), to reduce lipid absorption and stimulate lipid excretion. Turmeric (jianghuang) is also reported to lower lipids; the main active component appears to be curcumin, which gives the herb its yellow color. All these herbs vitalize blood circulation. Guggal-Rose substitutes for preparations containing red rice yeast, for which there remains controversy over its regulatory status, and for preparation with high dose niacin, an effective remedy with a high frequency of side effects. This formula can be used as an adjunct to Lotus Leaf Tablets or Salvia Shou Wu, and can be used with Genistemma or Alpha-Curcumone for additional lipid-lowering ingredients.* | |
