Description

Based on the case histories of the Northern Chinese master physician Dr. Wu Sheng’an (whose approach to difficult and recalcitrant diseases reflects the lineages of the imperial court physician Zhu Mulin and the middle/upper burner teachings of the 18th century clinician Huang Kunzai), this unique herb combination represents a primary way to regulate symptoms of stuck qi by reversing physical and emotional counterflow via the Lung and yangming networks, transforming phlegm, and nourishing Lung yin.

Therapeutic Principles

  • Disinhibit downward momentum of the LU/LI and related organ networks; clear physical and/or emotional stagnation in head, throat and chest areas; clear skin
  • Transform phlegm in the GB/ST, encourage downward draining function of all fu organs
  • Promote the flow of qi and blood by disinhibiting the “vessel opening” function of the LU
  • Regulate qi and fluid metabolism in upper and middle burners; alleviate lymphatic congestion by clearing fluid stagnation
  • Resolve toxic accumulation, prevent degeneration in lymphatic and vascular systems
  • Nourish LU yin, calm shen, ease emotional stress

Indications

  • Acute and chronic counterflow symptoms in the metal organ systems, i.e. chest and throat congestion, cough, wheezing, shortness of breath; constipation; skin conditions; chronic inflammation in the head and sensory orifices
  • Inhibited ability of the LU to execute its function of  “opening the 100 vessels,” manifesting as symptoms reflecting sluggish flow of qi, blood, and fluids: i.e., swollen lymph glands, chest pain, vascular calcifications and other forms of blood vessel obstruction
  • Inhibited ability of the LU to execute its function of being “the upper source of water,” manifesting as symptoms of disrupted fluid metabolism: i.e. inhibited urination, edema
  • Symptoms indicating disharmony between LV/GB and ST: i.e., bloating, blood sugar instability, heartburn
  • Toxic accumulations in lymph and vascular systems: i.e., plaque formation
  • Emotional symptoms of counterflow and stagnation: sensation of being stuck and overwhelmed, indecisiveness, grief/sadness, frequent sighing
  • Slippery pulse in LU position (right cun)
