Chinese name Tian Ma Gou Teng Yin
English name Calm Repose
Description

Nourish Kidney Yin, Extinguishes Liver Wind and sinks Liver Yang, Nourish Liver and Kidney Yin*

The main focus of Calm Repose (Tian Ma Gou Teng Yin) is to anchor upward rising Yang and Wind due to Kidney and Liver Yin deficiency. To that effect, Gastrodia rhizome and Gambir stem branch and twig, the main herbs in the formula, serve to subdue Liver Yang and extinguish Internal Wind. Abalone shell assists in the sinking of Yang back into the Lower Burner with its heavy mineral content.

Gardenia fruit and Chinese skullcap root clear Heat from the Upper Burner and the Heart. Siberian motherwort herb and Cyathula root open the Upper Burner to allow Yang energy and stagnant Blood to descend. Cyathula root also protects the Liver and Kidney Yin, while Siberian motherwort herb restores communication between the Heart and the Kidney, facilitating the descent of Heart Yang.

Polygonum multiflorum stem and Poria with wood root calm the Spirit, while Loranthus twig and Eucommia bark both consolidate the descending Yang back into the Kidney and simultaneously conserve its Yin.

Calm Repose effectively addresses Yin deficiency, but does not contain herbs that specifically tonify the Yin. Consequently, it is important to concurrently use a formula that tonifies Blood or Yin for animals that have a strong underlying Yin deficiency. Glehnia and Rehmannia Combination (Yi Guan Jian) or APR Nourishing Formula (Zhi Bai Di Huang Wan) are excellent complements to this formula.
