| Description | Bupleurum-Gardenia Tablets is a derivative of traditional formulas for damp-heat syndrome, including Bupleurum and Peony Formula, Bupleurum and Rehmannia Combination, and Gardenia and Bupleurum Combination. These formulas all have three ingredients in common: bupleurum, gardenia, and a type of peony. This new combination clears heat from three layers: bupleurum clears heat with the qi, gardenia clears heat combined with dampness, and peony clears heat in the blood. This heat does not necessarily produce a fever, especially in the case of chronic conditions, but does produce other heat-type symptoms, such as irritability, restlessness, insomnia, and inflammation. This particular formulation is modeled after treatments for hepatitis C, which is a disease caused by a pathogen that enters the blood system and then manifests secondary effects such as blood stasis, damp-heat, and qi disturbance. The virus, like other pathogenic influences, is deemed a type of heat-toxin and is treated in this formulation with oldenlandia and forsythia. Here, the traditional antitoxin pair of forsythia and lonicera is modified to reflect recent practices in which oldenlandia is frequently selected for difficult-to-remove infections in place of one of these herbs. The unique feature of this formula, compared to the traditional prescriptions, is the inclusion of astragalus, which has been included to boost the immune system, aid in vitalizing blood circulation, and to help alleviate the fatigue that accompanies chronic illness. For inflammatory conditions, adding Iridoid Complex may provide faster results. | |
