Description

Atractylodes Tablets is based on a modern Chinese clinical formula called Jianpi Lung that is used primarily for treating ulcerative colitis. That formula, like many used for treating chronic intestinal disorders, is based on the traditional Ginseng and Astragalus Combination, which tonifies qi and regulates spleen function. The main modification of that formula to yield Atractylodes Tablets is the replacement of bupleurum and cimicifuga with mume, catechu, and corydalis. Mume is an intestinal astringent containing organic acids that helps normalize the mucosa and alleviate the tendency to experience diarrhea. Catechu is an intestinal astringent that contains catechins, which inhibit intestinal infections, normalize the intestinal mucosa, alleviate ulceration and bleeding, and reduce the tendency towards diarrhea. Catechu also moves blood and helps reduce scar formation. Corydalis helps alleviate abdominal aching. Chronic intestinal diseases often involve periods of constipation, which is best treated by drinking plenty of fluids and consuming a high fiber diet, rather than relying on laxatives which may change the condition to diarrhea. Bouts of diarrhea and even intestinal bleeding may occur in some of the disorders, especially ulcerative colitis; adding Imperata 10 may help control that symptom. According to the Chinese docterine, by tonifying the qi, the disorder may go into long-term remission.
