Description | Accumulation of moisture may occur secondary to several organ system imbalances and in association with many diseases. Fundamental prescriptions for draining accumulated moisture include the traditional Hoelen Five Formula, Citrus and Pinellia Combination, and Hoelen, Atractlyodes, and Areca Combination which were the basis for Alisma 16. Usually, the Chinese moisture-resolving formulas are designed to treat a specific site of moisture accumulation. Alisma 16 is a generalized formulation that can be used as a basis for all moisture-accumulation disorders. Site-specificity can be attained by adding a second formulation. The formula might be used along with diuretic drugs. Water accumulation may be a symptom of severe disease, including kidney or heart failure or peritonitis secondary to liver inflammation, so appropriate diagnostics should be pursued. Powerful diuretic drugs may need to be used as part of the therapy, at least temporarily. The functional disorder of dampness accumulation, even when there are no obvious signs of edema or excessive moisture discharge, can cause a sense of heaviness in the limbs, difficulty waking in the morning, and dull aching sensations. When water affects the head, there can be dizziness, a feeling of heaviness of the head, and confusion. Moisture accumulation in the arms can cause tingling and stiffness. | |
