Mineral Baths Can Heal Skin and Repel Infection

Baths with bubbles, candles, and a good book can melt stress, which is good for you. But some baths offer benefits far beyond relaxation. The healing and protective qualities of mineral baths have been known to humanity for thousands of years and are currently prescribed as an insured treatment in Germany [1].

What’s a Mineral Bath?

In 1981, a man suffering from painful psoriasis entered the warm, milky waters of what has become one of the most famous mineral baths in the world, Iceland’s Blue Lagoon, and felt relief [2]. The silica (silicon dioxide) in the water was absorbed through his skin and entered his bloodstream. This is also the mechanism of patches for pain relief and drug delivery. Different baths will have different therapeutic effects based on their mineral content, from onsen in Japan to the aforementioned Hellbad (healing baths) in Baden-Baden to our neighborhood hot springs in Hot Springs, NC (we hope for their swift and safe recovery from Hurricane Helene!).

Which Mineral Bath is Right for Me?

It’s important that the mineral bathing products you use contain natural minerals that are bioactive and that they are used properly. Otherwise the minerals may be ineffective or even toxic. The founder of Only Healing Minerals (OHM), Ruth Findlay, is a geochemist who studied under Dr. Heiner Fruehauf (NUNM’s founder), and offers a wide range of formulations and guidance.

If you’re interested in a Blue Lagoon effect, try Immunology or Replenish. These formulations also contain manganese, a trace element that can help the body repel viral infections. Research indicates that the element is used by so-called interferons that interfere with a virus’ ability to infect cells as part of its replication process [3]. When enough cells are infected and the body triggers more immune responses, we feel sick.

Why Should I Try One Now?

Trace elements are so named because they occur in small quantities, however, they are highly valuable for biological processes. We absorb them from every meal but bioavailability is variable. This time of year, as our bodies work extra hard to repel disease and keep us healthy, trace minerals like manganese and zinc are used up more quickly. Mineral baths offer a supplement to offset this imbalance. Plus, they’re super relaxing!
